Every year, Australians come home from Bali, Thailand and Vietnam with the same story: a scooter accident, a hospital bill in the tens of thousands, and a travel insurance claim declined because they were riding unlicensed or their policy excluded motorcycles entirely. It is one of the most predictable insurance disasters in travel, and it is entirely avoidable. This guide explains exactly how to ride with cover, using Travel Protect's optional motorcycle and moped pack on the Explorer plan.

Why standard policies leave riders exposed

Across the Australian market, riding a motorcycle, moped or scooter overseas is typically excluded from standard travel insurance, or covered only under narrow conditions. Insurers treat two-wheel travel as a distinct risk because the injuries are frequent and severe, especially in Southeast Asian traffic. So the traveller who assumes their ordinary policy covers a Canggu scooter run is usually wrong, and finds out at the worst possible moment. Travel Protect's approach is to make it an explicit, priced choice: add the motorcycle and moped pack and riding is covered on the pack's terms, rather than hoping a general policy stretches to fit.

What the pack covers

Added to an Explorer plan, the motorcycle and moped pack extends your cover so that riding, as the driver does not void the policy's core protections:

  • Emergency medical treatment for injuries sustained while riding, under the plan's unlimited* overseas emergency medical benefit, including hospital treatment, evacuation to an appropriate facility and repatriation to Australia if medically necessary.
  • 24/7 emergency assistance, who can deal directly with the treating hospital. In Bali in particular, clinics ask for payment guarantees before treating crash injuries, and this is where the assistance team earns its place.
  • The rest of your policy stays intact: cancellation and trip interruption up to your selected limit, and luggage cover if a bag is damaged or lost in an incident, per your policy limits.

The conditions that decide whether a claim is paid

Motorcycle cover everywhere in the market is conditional, and the conditions are not fine print, they are the whole game. Meet them and the pack works; miss them and even a packed policy will not respond:

  • Be licensed for the vehicle. You need to be legally allowed to ride that vehicle in that country. For most of Southeast Asia that means a valid motorcycle licence plus an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle class endorsed. An Australian car licence does not license you to ride a scooter in Bali, whatever the rental shop says.
  • Wear a helmet. A helmet requirement is standard, it is also the law in Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam, and riding without one is a common reason claims fail.
  • Do not ride under the influence. Alcohol and drug exclusions apply to riding as they do to everything else in the policy.
  • Rent legally. Ride a roadworthy, legally rented or owned vehicle. Informal rentals with no paperwork create problems for both police and claims.

The licence question, country by country

  • Bali / Indonesia - Full motorcycle licence plus an International Driving Permit with motorcycle endorsement. Police stops of foreign riders are routine; helmets are mandatory.
  • Thailand - Motorcycle licence plus IDP with motorcycle class. A car licence or car-only IDP is not sufficient for scooters.
  • Vietnam - Requirements for foreign licences are stricter and have changed over time; verify current rules before the trip.
  • Europe (Greece, Italy islands) - Licence class must match the vehicle; 50cc rules vary by country. An IDP is recommended alongside your Australian licence.

Getting an Australian motorcycle licence before a scooter-heavy trip is not a formality, it is the cheapest part of the whole risk chain: it makes you legal, it makes you insurable, and it means you have actually been taught to ride.

What this looks like when it goes wrong, and right

Without the pack: an unlicensed rider comes off a scooter in Ubud, fractures a leg, and needs surgery and a medical escort home. The riding exclusion applies, the claim is declined, and the family funds a five-figure hospital bill and repatriation privately.

With the pack and the conditions met: the same crash, but the rider is licensed, helmeted, and carries an Explorer policy with the motorcycle and moped pack. One call to the 24/7 assistance line, the hospital deals with the insurer's team rather than the rider's credit card, and the unlimited* emergency medical benefit covers treatment and any potential medically-necessary journey home.

Adding the pack

Get an Explorer quote, and select the motorcycle and moped pack in the upgrades step alongside any other packs your trip needs. The pack prices from your trip details like the rest of the policy. If your plans change after purchase and you decide to ride, request a plan change before you get on the bike, not after.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

I am only riding as a passenger. Do I need the pack?

No - To ride as a pillion passenger, you do not require a moped pack.

Does the pack cover damage to the rental scooter?

No. The pack is about you, not the bike. Damage to a rented motorcycle or scooter is between you and the rental company, so photograph the vehicle thoroughly before riding off.

Is personal liability covered if I injure someone else while riding?

Yes. Under the Explorer policy, you'll have coverage up to $250,000 for coverage against personal liability, subject to the policy terms and conditions.

*Note that not all benefits apply and will depend on whether you have selected them (and are reflected on your Certificate of Insurance). Terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub-limits apply.
