Here is the thing most first-time cruisers do not know: a standard travel insurance policy often does not respond once the ship leaves port. Medical treatment on board is private, billed at private rates, and delivered in international waters. If you need to be taken off the ship, the evacuation is measured in helicopters, not taxi fares. This is why cruising is treated as its own trip type, and why Travel Protect offers a dedicated cruise pack on the Explorer plan.

What makes cruise claims different

  • Onboard medical centres charge like private hospitals. Even a minor infection treated at sea generates a real bill. With the cruise pack added, eligible onboard treatment falls under your unlimited* overseas emergency medical benefit.
  • Missing the ship is expensive. A delayed connecting flight that makes you miss embarkation, or a missed port day, can cascade into new flights and hotels. Cancellation and trip interruption cover of up to $40,000 on Explorer can respond to eligible costs.
  • Evacuation at sea is a major operation. Our 24/7 emergency assistance team coordinates medical evacuations, including from ships, under the emergency medical benefit.

Setting up cruise cover properly

Choose the Explorer plan, add the cruise pack, and make sure your destination selection matches the itinerary: an Australian coastal cruise is selected differently from a South Pacific or Mediterranean sailing. Consider setting your cancellation limit to the full prepaid cost of the cruise fare plus all other travel expenses (including flights and accommodation), because cruise fares are among the least refundable products in travel. If your sailing includes shore excursions like snorkelling or ziplining, these are the kinds of activities Travel Protect's cover is designed around; check the excluded activity list when you quote.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need cruise cover for a cruise that never leaves Australian waters?

Yes. Once on board, medical care is private even in Australian waters, and Medicare does not apply on the ship. Select the Australian Waters Cruising option when quoting.

Is COVID on a cruise covered?

Both plans include cancellation cover for a positive COVID-19 diagnosis before departure, up to your cancellation limit. Note that a COVID Basic plan does not offer cover for cruises.

Can older travellers get cruise cover?

Yes, Travel Protect covers travellers up to age 99, which suits cruising's demographics better than the 60 to 75 age caps common elsewhere.
